One of the easiest ways to update, restyle, recycle or match to your home décor is by applying decoupage. You can actually decoupage almost any solid surface.
So when its time to add some themed decorations to celebrate an event or season, its a great way to make some gorgeous decorations that look like they are from a high end store when in fact you made them for a fraction of the cost at home.
There are several different ways you can apply decoupage
In small squares in a patchwork fashion, often known as deco-patch, creating a random pattern
In large sections showing the whole picture or pattern of the napkin
Painting with decoupage, taking sections or elements of several napkins to create a whole new picture/scene.
Depending on the object and the look you are going for would generally dictate the style in which you would apply your napkins.
My own personal favourite is creating a picture using several napkins.
When using napkins you only need the top layer with the print on. Peel away the other layers and these can be used for cleaning up. They can also be used to practice with before doing your chosen item. Just grab an old plastic pot to practice on first.
With using decorative paper napkins you have to be gentle. Apply the glue to the object and lay the napkin on top dabbing the edges with a brush.
When applying in the patchwork fashion or painting style, you need to slightly over lap the edges so you don't see the joins. I always find that tearing the napkins gives a much better finish and look than cutting with scissors. Once you have finished adding all your napkin allow to dry then apply a layer of the glue to seal it properly.
To speed up drying you can use a hairdryer on a low setting so as not to disturb the napkins on the object.
Before decoupaging I always give a coat of paint to the item as the napkins tend to go transparent and it gives it a better finish and look. I used acrylic on the pumpkin.

If you want to recreate the decoupaged pumpkin the napkins used are in the autumn pack of the decoupage paper napkins available on the online shop
